McClelland's

I know a lot of people like the idea of a cheap Islay malt, and this whisky tends to be fairly popular among peat-heads. I like the idea to, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

McClelland's Islay is, to the best of my knowledge, 5 year old Bowmore single malt. On the nose there is lemon, thin smoke (burnt paper), damp earth, even a bit of mint. Not a bad nose, though not very substantial.

Fairly light on the tongue, and somewhat sour. The arrival is a bit sweet but then the taste of damp, charred wood arrives. The peat and citrus notes are there but are not very refined. It is neither as satisfying as a single malt should be, nor as easy-drinking as a decent blend. Doesn't beg for repeated sipping.

The finish is a bit peaty but that sour citrus note dominates.

Balance is what this malt really lacks. It is not a harmonious experience to me. The citrus is too sharp, the smoke too thin, and the predominate character is that funky charred wood note that gives the whisky a slightly dirty feel. I was lukewarm about this whisky at first but after having a few bottles I've decided that I really don't like it.
